A CHAT WITH THE EDITOR:
Just for fun….
October is National Popcorn Poppin’ Month.
From the Popcorn Board, Chicago
Popcorn History –
Anthropologists found popcorn kernels more than 3,000 years old that still popped.
English colonists were introduced to popcorn at the first Thanksgiving feast.
In the 1920’s, popcorn was banned at most movie theaters because it was considered too noisy.
According to American movie theaters, more popcorn is sold during the showing of scary movies.

On the health front-
Popcorn is a source of carbohydrate energy and fiber. Carbohydrate is the best source of body fuel. Fiber is not used for energy, but is an important health factor, which is insufficient in most American diets. Soluble fiber plays a role in regulating hunger, cholesterol and blood sugar and insoluble is important in gastrointestinal health.
Health and medical groups feel popcorn has nutritive value too! Popcorn is a wholesome, fun food, which aids digestion by providing necessary roughage.
Health and medical associations regard popcorn as an excellent mealtime complement-sugar free, fat-free and low in calories.
*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*
Plain popcorn itself is a healthy, low-calorie, whole grain food with four grams of fiber per three cups. Air-popped corn has only 20 calories per cup so you can scarf down five guilt-free cups for only 100 calories.
*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*
Nurses have been given an insight into living as an elderly person.
With popcorn in their shoes to simulate bunions and mobility problems the hospital staff at Delancey Hospital in Cheltenham have been learning first hand the difficulties of old age.

Heavenly Hash Popcorn
1 serving
1/4 cup butter 1 cup pecans, toasted
1 cup chocolate chips 6 cups popcorn, popped
4 cups miniature marshmallows
In a heavy saucepan, put the butter, chocolate and pecans.
Cook over a moderate heat until melted, stirring frequently to prevent burning.
Pour over the popped corn and marshmallows. Stir well.
Spread on a buttered cookie sheet and refrigerate to cool.
For variations, you may wish to substitute butterscotch morsels or use bitter chocolate. White chocolate pieces in place of chips make a pretty white candy which can be colored and molded into shaped cake pans. Yogurt candy coating can also be used for a more piquant flavor.
Happy Popping!

**Fibromyalgia and Growth Hormone Study
We are presently conducting a study on treatment of Fibromyalgia patients with human growth hormone. There has been some research done that has shown that 30% of all Fibromyalgia patients are growth hormone deficient and replacing these levels to normal abated most of the symptoms of Fibromyalgia.
In addition to reduction in pain, we are also evaluating the medical benefits of GH, previous research has indicated improvements in immune function, cardiac function, osteoporosis, energy levels, depression, and loss of fat with increases in muscle mass.

** Chronic Insomnia Shown to be a Medical Condition, Not Just Loss of Sleep
Bethesda, MD, August 10, 2001 - New research shows that insomnia, the most commonly encountered sleep disorder, may be the results of a physiological problem, rather than just sleep loss. A study published in the August issue of the Journal of Clinical Endocrinology & Metabolism reveals that insomniacs suffer from a specific medical condition,

** We may be prescribed drugs for our Fibromyalgia and/or CFS which could, in reality, worsen our symptoms by interfering with Stage IV (delta wave) sleep.
Stage IV is that part of the sleep cycle when the brain helps repair the daily wear and tear of the body. If it is disturbed (and therefore shortened), we awake stiff, sore, and/or without feeling refreshed. Most of the Fibromyalgia research indicates that Stage IV sleep is implicated in causing and/or influencing our symptoms.

THE MEDICINE OF LAUGHTER AND INSPIRATION “There’s no fun in medicine, but there’s a lot of medicine in fun.” ~ Anonymous

A client brought a litter of golden retriever puppies to my veterinary
clinic for inoculations and worming. As the look-alike
pups squirmed over and under one another in their box, I realized it
would be difficult to tell the treated ones from the rest. So, I
turned on the water faucet, wet my fingers, and moistened each dog's head
when I had finished.
After the fourth puppy, I noticed my talkative client had grown silent.
As I sprinkled the last pup's head, the woman leaned forward and whispered,
"I didn't know they had to be baptized, too."

AQUATIC THERAPY
**********************************************************************
In the past when treating a fibromyalgia client, both of us ended up frustrated and disappointed. Nothing they or I did provided a lasting, positive effect. At best, modalities such as hot packs, ultrasound and massage provided only temporary relief. When the client went into the gym and exercised, it would often turn out to be a one-time event. Afterward the client would go home to bed for two or three days to recover from the well-intentioned exercise therapy.
When I began working with these clients in the aquatic environment, I hoped they could exercise without incurring the adverse reactions experienced on land. That did not happen. So began the problem solving … how to meaningfully intervene in an aquatic setting with the fibromyalgia client?

Why does Aquatic Physical Therapy work?
Early joint movement is possible in water even if you are experiencing pain. Water supports the body and reduces stress to joints so you can strengthen and tone your muscles while your injury heals.

Exercises in water differ considerably from apparently similar exercises in air because of the differences in the physical properties of the two environments. As with other forms of therapeutic exercises, water exercises increase muscle power and endurance and helps mobilize joints and muscles. In addition, it recreation.
